Sergio Leanza and Anna Fairhead-Benitez at Funkidory

Neighbourhood bar Funkidory in Peckham Rye is to close, after its owners Sergio Leanza and Anna Fairhead-Benitez announced it was London’s latest hospitality casualty.

The owners pointed to “a storm of challenges: a pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis, and the never-ending squeeze on small businesses”.

The bar, which opened in 2018, had a reputation as one of the best bars south of the river, with central London-level cocktails served up alongside vinyl records and a warm neighbourhood vibe.

Leanza and Fairhead-Benitez said: “We’ve pushed, adapted, sacrificed and held on for as long as we possibly could, but we’ve now reached the end of the road.

“We started Funkidory because we loved it, believed in it, and wanted to build something special. And we did. We made people happy, created memories, and brought a vibe and good times to a little corner of Peckham. If that’s the measure, then it’s mission accomplished.”

Next week will be the bar’s final week of trading, with its last service on Saturday 20 December.
