West Country reviewer Ellen Manning reports from Newquay, Cornwall.
In a fabulous spot, with a terrace overlooking the beach, Saltsheds has light, airy decor and staff as friendly as it gets.
But while it has the potential to serve decent drinks (as a few other places do in Newquay, before you dismiss it as the land of VK Blue and stag dos), it’s not there yet.
Cocktails are a populist mix of Mai Tais, Mojitos and Margs, with a few others thrown in. In fairness, the Spicy Margarita isn’t that bad. There’s no real garnish and it’s pretty one dimensional, but there’s spice and a citrus kick.
It beats the Meloni Sour, whose lurid green will remain in my memory for a long time to come. Saltsheds’ boundless enthusiasm makes you want to love it, but once the initial fun has passed, you might want to head elsewhere for something more refi ned.
