Dave Marsland was in Liverpool to visit the city's latest agave bar.

Liverpool and tequila have always gone together, with the likes of dive bar El Bandito and restaurant Madre creating the association. Now its Picante’s turn, opening within Cains Brewery Village in the Baltic Triangle and headed up by Kate Meehan, Joe Wild, Sally Jo Whitlow and Danny Murphy.

With a two-floor venue, they’ve adapted the space into a traditional Mexican cantina, with existing tiles adding to the authentic vibes. With stools and wooden tables dotted around, wicker lamp shades and the neon signs of Corona, a homely vibe is created which is perfect for fresh tacos and an agave-driven drinks menu.

There’s a good Margarita – frozen too – and other classics spun in the direction of Mexico. The Cornstar Martini, the mezcal-driven Mexican Old Fashioned and tequila-laced Strawberry Woo Woo are all well worth a try. Expect to while away a good few hours on the terrace with a sotol in one hand and Pacifico in the other.
