CLASS reviewer for the North, Dave Marsland, headed out to one of this winter's biggest launches - Ego Death.
Manchester’s newest speakeasy has opened with much fanfare as Ego Death takes up residence in the city’s Northern Quarter.
Headed up by Cressida Lawlor of Sexy Fish fame, the venue goes beyond the lick-of-paint approach to renovation, with a new look entirely for the site. The bar has moved to a more accessible position, and low-level lighting and subtle spotlights highlight the exposed brick and open-plan layout of the seating areas.
At time of visiting the menu was more of a pilot – another was due in a matter of weeks – and brings us signatures including the Champagne Gimlet with No.3 gin.
Cressie’s dream is for Ego Death to be more than a bar and be at the forefront of the local scene, offering talks and showcases. A bartender favourite, it feels like a hub for the industry already.
