Dave Marsland stops by Louis in Manchester.
Spinningfields is again the destination for the third concept of Permanently Unique Group – behind names such as Tattu and Fenix – bringing its version of fine Italian American cuisine, with a soundtrack of jazz, blues, funk and big band.
Though food is the main attraction at Louis, luckily, the venue is big enough to not feel like dinner is a must, with the plush burgundy velvet décor and small linen-clothed tables adorning the room separated from the bar.
With its drinks menu split into the three stages of dining, Louis hasn’t attempted to reinvent the wheel, but has kept to its theme.
The list includes the likes of Amaro Santoni in its Garibaldi, while there is a balsamic glaze and parmigiano twist to the Manhattan, and a PB & J Old Fashioned with Angel’s Envy.
Live music adds a level of atmosphere that most other venues struggle with, although in the age of social media and spreading good vibes, whether the ‘no photos’ rule works is another question.
