Reviewer in the North, Dave Marsland, visits one Manchester's biggest opening of the year - Stray.
Looking out from Mackie Mayor, the food hall that has transformed a part of Manchester’s Northern Quarter, Stray brings a slice of cocktail culture that would not look out of place in the UK’s capital.
With its corner long bar, window ledge seating and sofas spread among its exposed white brick and ivy green wood panels, the décor lends itself to a sophisticated space to enjoy the Tomato Vine Margarita.
Blending tomato vine-infused El Tequileño with mezcal, Helios tomato, agave, acid blend and grapefruit oil, this twist on the classic has now become a fi rm-favourite that defi ned Stray as ‘one-to-watch’, but is also my go-to upon repeated visits.
The service is friendly, offering up a neighbourhood bar vibe that brings in date nights, after-work drinkers and small groups of cocktail lovers going through the ever-evolving cocktail menu.
Although a big plus on the drinks, the 1858 building of Mackie Mayor does bring with it its echo, which can amplify the smallest of noises from the bar.
