The owners of Tayēr + Elementary, Monica Berg and Alex Kratena, have revealed that their Old Street bar will not reopen this year after it was forced into closure by a fire in their building.
The fire damage occurred in a neighbouring basement but has forced the award-winning bar into closure since May.
The owners said: “It’s now clear that we won’t be able to reopen Tayēr + Elementary this year. We won’t pretend this isn’t incredibly frustrating. Being unable to open our doors for reasons completely outside of our control has been difficult, and we miss the bar, our routine, our regulars and the everyday rhythm of sharing our space with all of you more than we can say.
“But more than anything, we feel incredibly grateful. The amount of love, patience and support we’ve received over the past few months has meant a lot to all of us. We can’t wait for the day we finally get to welcome you back. We don’t know exactly when that will be yet, but as soon as we do, you’ll be the first to know.”
“Until then — thank you for sticking with us. We miss you, and we’ll see you in the bar.”
In lieu of their permanent space, the pair created the pop-up Casual by Tayēr in the basement space of Covent Garden bar Cato in July and August.
